school Counselors can create Access Plans and provide advocacy for every student by (based on 9 ASCA Standards--adapted from Chen-Hayes Developmental School Counseling Lecture Notes):
In academics development : - by evaluating what the goals of academic success are in the current year, and by consiering what can be done to reach them -by evaluating what wasn't effective and/or successful the past year, and by determining what support is available to meet the goals -by knowing the exact number of credits and courses required to graduate high school with a regents or advanced regents diploma (and understanding it's importance). In career development: -School Counselors ask students to: -select their top three career choices and also consider the courses necessary to accomplish this career choice. -select their top three interests,state their hobbies, outside activities and skills. College/Postsecondary Education: -School counselors ask students to identify what their plans are after high school, and what they're doing to prepare themselves to succeed in the future (i.e.graduating from college with a diploma, or succeeding at another post-secondary institution/education. -determining if additional information can be provided to help families overcome obstacles and fears related to obtaining a college education. -determining the gaps which need to be to approached to address access to classes, counseling necessary for college preparation and opportunities post high school. In personal/social development: -students are asked to identify their hopes and dreams -as well as identify anything that may be interfering with the fulfillment of their plans -School Counselors explain their interest and availability to students, in support of their goals/dreams (asking; how can we help you be successful in your goals and help you achieve your dreams). |
